8th National Voter’s Day observed by Odisha Election Watch

Bhubaneswar: The National Voter’s day or Rashtriya Matdata Diwas is celebrated every year on 25th January to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India , which was established on 25th January, 1950.The significance of National Voters’ Day is to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process who have reached the age of 18, to participate in the electoral process, by enrolling or registering themselves in electoral rolls and to exercise their franchise.

 

To mark the 8 th National Voter’s day different programmes were organised today by Odisha Election watch , a civil society platform working for voter’s awareness ,political and electoral reforms and the state chapter of National Election Watch ,in collaboration with Association of Democratic Reforms and in cooperation with People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC). A mini marathon – “ Run for democracy” ,with participation of large number of youths and students was flagged up near Ram Mandir squire by Dr. Rabinarayan Senapati , State Election Commissioner , Odisha in presence of Prof. Jagdip Chhokar , Founder trustee of ADR , Dr. Sahadev Sahoo , Former Chief Secretary , Odisha,Mr A.B Tripathy , former DG Police , Anuradha Biswal ,Olympian and many other eminemt dignitaries. The mini marathon ended at Bhanjakalamandap followed by a grand function with meeting and Patriotic songs by young artists .While speaking on the occasion Prof Jagdip Chhokar , Founder Trustee of ADR narrated the importance of National voters day and stressed that the young generation has to take the responsibility of safe guarding the country & the constitution .The youth most register their name in their eligible age and by giving vote they will deliver their duty and responsibility for the nation .Prof Chhokar stressed on the active participation of young generation in the political and electoral process. Dr. Arundhati Devi , Social Activist and leader of Sarbodaya Andolan emphasized that “we have to build up prosperous India ,a developed nation and for this we have to work hard . There is no time for destructive criticism.”
The meeting which was presided over by Sj.Sahadev Sahoo,Former Chief Secretary of Govt of Odisha and Ranjan Kumar Mohanty ,Coordinator of Odisha Election watch gave the welcome and introductory remarks.The meeting was also addressed by Anuradha Biswal ,SJ Baikunthanath Panigrahi ,Former Deputy Director General , Prasar Bharati , Core team member Dr. Seba Mahapatra , renowned Gynaecologist , Sj.Pradosh Pattnaik, Eminent Journalist,Khyamakar Swain , Core team member OEW , spoke on the occasion. A large number of youth from KISS &KITT , Sports Hostel,NSS, Utkal University , BJB College , Ambedkar hostel participated in the programme
