Bhubaneswar: His Excellency Dr. S C Jamir, Hon’ble Governor of Odisha here on Friday inaugurated “Apollo Stroke Care Unit” in Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar. This advanced Stroke Care Unit is a multi-disciplinary entity where stroke patients will be assessed by doctors, specialist nurses, physio & speech therapists to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient.
Addressing on the occasion Hon’ble Governor of Odisha said that Apollo Hospitals has been an epitome of dedicated care and service to the patients of the state and outside. It is indeed another important service which has been flagged off today. This stroke care unit will not only facilitate timely care to brain stroke patients but will also help such patients get treatment of international standards within the state.
Equipped with the best in class ICUs and doctors of international repute, this stroke care unit shall add a new dimension in patient care at the hospital. I am sure that the dedicated stroke care team with a commitment of the fastest response time in case of a brain stroke shall serve the requirement of the people of Odisha to the fullest, added Dr. Jamir
Shri Sudhir M. Diggikar, Regional Chief Executive Officer of Apollo Hospitals, Odisha & Chhattisgarh said that the burden of stroke is unarguably a national issue and should be addressed. Stroke Units are wards dedicated to the care of acute stroke patients and stroke patients who need rehabilitation by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals, who are trained specifically in the care of stroke patients. There is evidence that organized multidisciplinary care is more effective.

Developing countries like India are facing a double burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in India, said Dr. Bikash Ku. Mishra, Chief Neurologist of Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar. Life style related diseases are surging ahead in an alarming rate which has direct bearing on the proportion of stroke cases as the major risk factors and India is now epicenter for Diabetes Mellitus. One out of every 3 patients with stroke are not accessing appropriate healthcare probably due to non-affordability, usage of alternative medicines, and difficulty in conveyance, informed Dr. Mishra.
It is assumed that the average age of patients with stroke in developing countries is usually 15 years younger than those in developed countries. Very few centers have dedicated stroke care units and stroke units are predominantly available in urban areas that too in mostly private hospitals.
