Debashri Debasmita wins Photography Competition
Dhenkanal: Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal celebrated World Photography Day with a photography competition among its students. Speaking on the occasion Professor and Regional Director of the Institute Dr. Mrinal Chatterjee stressed on the importance of the day and its history.
Dr. Chatterjee also outlined various aspects of Photo-Journalism. He said that photo-journalism emerged as an important field after the World War II. There are many significant examples of photo-journalism upto 1970s. After advent of television during this time, photo-journalism lost some ground. However, with offset printing technology and better quality camera in 1980s photo-journalism regained its lost ground. Because of advanced communication technologies photo-journalism is at its peak. There are many noteworthy photographs which are recorded in history canvas prints.
Giving examples of some of the best photographs, Dr. Chatterjee said that the future of photo-journalism is very bright. Journalism students should use the power of photo-journalism for their professional excellence. This genre of photography is absolutely different from street photography and fashion photography. It is timely, unbiased and descriptive. people who are in the profession of photo-journalism should focus on these, he added.
On the occasion, the institute also organised a photography completion among its students. The photograph of flower with butterfly taken by Debashri Debasmita Sahoo was selected for the first prize in this completion.
