Upgradation of State Highways into National Highways on the basis of connectivity inter-sepriority and availability of funds

New Delhi : Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is responsible for National Highways projects. States Highways are the responsibility of states. However, the Ministry approached by various State Governments / Union Territories (UTs) etc., including from the State Government of Andhra Pradesh, for declaration of State roads, including the State Highways (SHs), as new National Highways (NHs). The Ministry considers declaration of some State roads, including the SHs, as new NHs from time to time based on requirement of connectivity, inter-se priority and availability of funds.

Works on notified NHs, including newly declared NHs, are taken up as per inter-se-priority, progress of ongoing works, availability of funds and traffic density. No financial allocation is separately made for such upgradation and the work when sanctioned is executed through existing budgetary allocations.

This information was given by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
