United Nations ECOSOC granted Special Consultative Status to PECUC

Bhubaneswar: People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC), a leading voluntary organization of Odisha was granted Special Consultative Status by United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in it’s coordination and management meeting held on 6th June 2019. A letter in this regards from the Acting Chief, NGO Branch, Office of the Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development, Deptt. Of Economic and Social Affairs was received today by PECUC office at Bhubaneswar. Consultative status for an organization enables it to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programmes, and agencies in a number of ways. Consultative relationship with NGOs also enables the Council or one of its bodies to seek expert information or advice from organizations with special competence in a subject matter.
Peoples’ Cultural Centre (PECUC) was initiated in late 1980s by a group of social activists, professionals from different background, artists and National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers to help the children of different slums and outskirt villages of Bhubaneswar and also to provide a platform to the children to explore their potential. Finally got legal entity during 1990, with the purpose to empower the weaker sections of the society. PECUC’S mission is to empower and enable people especially children, women, the aged and others disadvantaged in society, to participate powerfully in their holistic development. PECUC is primarily a child rights focused organization, and prioritized to focus on the issues relating to child rights, deepening democracy, women empowerment, health & Sanitation, livelihood, rights of the senior citizens, emergency management & climate change adaptation too, during these years. PECUC has pioneered in the field of eradication of child labour in the country and rescued & rehabilitated 32069 child labourers. PECUC has also been awarded with different awards and honours by different Govt and Non Govt organizations. Recently PECUC also has been accepted as a member of Global Partnership to End Violence against Children.

PECUC is now in its 29th year of getting legal entity and PECUC’s representatives will be able to register for and participate in events, conferences and activities of the United Nations and organizations in general and special consultative status may designate authorized representatives to sit as observers at public meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, the Human Rights Council and, under certain conditions, the General Assembly and other United Nations intergovernmental bodies.
