We don’t have to wait long for the next edition of the Indian Premier League as the T20 tournament is next to return in March, with many of the world’s leading players set to feature again.
In 2020, the regular season standings were really tight, which meant there were a number of bad luck stories for teams which failed to reach the playoffs.
Here is a look at two teams who missed out on the post-season in 2020 but could be a good bet to lift the trophy in 2021.
Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings hit form too late in 2020, which meant they had to settle for seventh place in the standings. They showed how strong they can be with victories coming in their final three games of the campaign.
In their final game of the IPL season, they defeated the Kings XI Punjab by nine wickets in what was a dominant performance with the bat and ball.
The Super Kings have the perfect mix of experience and young players who are developing into fantastic pros. The likes of MS Dhoni, Imran Tahir and Harbhajan Singh obviously fall into the former category but still have a lot to offer in this format of the game. Then there are Sam Curran and Lungi Ngidi, their two overseas players, who have the potential to really make their mark in 2021.
One player who won’t be with the Super Kings next season is Shane Watson. The Australian has been a fantastic player for the franchise since 2018 so they will be hoping someone can fill his shoes in the new campaign next year.
Chennai know all about IPL success as a franchise as they are three times winners of the trophy, with victories coming in 2010, 2011 and 2018. They may not have to wait long to bring up win number four as their team are very much on the up so they are likely to be one of the leading tips on the Cricket Betting site on the IPL in 2021. Do look out for the leading promotions on the tournament before placing your bet though, to ensure you are getting the best price and bonus available.
Kings XI Punjab
Kings XI Punjab are still looking for their maiden IPL win. They have reached the playoffs on just two occasions, their most recent appearance in the postseason coming in 2014 when they topped the standings at the end of the regular campaign.
Fans of the franchise can be quite confident about how 2021 could go for their team. There were glimpses of brilliance in 2020 which suggests they have all the right pieces to make a strong challenge for the title next year. One thorn in the Kings XI side is the introduction of a 9th IPL team for the 2021 season. Can they keep their players?
In terms of batting line-up, Kings XI Punjab can rival any team in the league. They have the explosion of Chris Gayle, who remains the most dangerous player in the world in T20 cricket, Glenn Maxwell is more than capable of winning a game on his own, while their captain KL Rahul proved how talented he is in 2020 as he topped the individual standings with 670 runs.
The majority of Kings XI’s budget on their bowling in 2020 went on Mohammed Shami and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. They are likely to lead the attack again next year. It is worth bearing in mind that the latter is just 19 years old, so there is a lot more to come from him. If they can add another player who can really make a difference with the ball next season, they should definitely be considered as one of the teams who can cause a surprise in the betting for the trophy.
Let’s hope next season’s competition is as exciting as this year’s has been and, if you are backing one of the above two teams, hopefully, they are able to come out on top when it is all wrapped up.
