Koraput: The Swachhta Pakhwada has been observed from 16th January, 2020 at the Central University of Odisha ended on 30 January 20220 with a Seminar Talk on the topic “Preventing Communicable Diseases by maintaining Hygiene and Cleanliness”. Prof. Nirupama Ray, Head of Physiology Department, Shahid Laxman Naik Medical College, Koraput delivered the lecture as the chief speaker on this occasion. Prof. I Ramabrahmam, Vice-Chancellor of the University conveyed his best wishes to the NSS Bureau, CUO for successful organizing the programme. In his message Prof. Ramabrahmam mentioned that maintaining Hygiene and Cleanliness are important duties for every individual and the same message initiated by the Government of India should be communicated by our students, teachers and staff to the society. The programme began with a report presentation by Sh. Sujit Kumar Mohanty, Programme Co-ordinator, NSS Bureau, CUO.
The Swachhata Pakhwada is a flagship programme of the Government of India and aims at inculcating a sense of responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in all aspects of an individual’s life.
Speaking on the occasion of the Seminar talk today, Prof. P. Durga Prasad, visiting professor in the Department of Sociology beautifully highlighted the fact that health is an integral component in the overall development of a nation and under no circumstances can its importance decline.
Prof. Nirupama Ray, spoke on the various aspects of communicable diseases and what can the common people do to address the malaise of such diseases. At a time when countries like China are battling the corona virus, which has resulted in the death of more than 130 individuals, it is high time to look at this issue seriously.
The Swachhta Pakhwada in Central University of Odisha began with a Pledge Taking ceremony on the 16th of January, 2020 in which all the students, teachers and staff participated and pledged to be torch bearers of this massive national movement. The pledge honored the vision of Mahatma Gandhi who had dreamt of an India which was not only free but also clean and developed. Countries of the world appearing clean are not solely due to government intervention but because of active participation from the citizens who have understood their civic duties.
Members of the university community pledged to devote 100 hours per year for cleanliness related activities and also encourage 100 other persons to take the same pledge.
A unique and innovative event known as plogging was also organized on 17th January, 2020 as part of the Pakhwada in which students and staff participated in large numbers. Plogging is an event which combines jogging with the act of picking litter.
A poster making competition on the theme of “SAVE WATER, SAVE EARTH” was also organized on 22nd January, 2020 in which students of the university had participated in large numbers. Winners of the Poster making competition were also felicitated.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Aditya Keshari Mishra, Programme Officer – NSS, CUO and the programme concluded with the singing of national anthem.
