Society of Geoscientists and Allied Technologists organizes Mineral Development Awareness and Quiz Programme

Joda: Society of Geoscientists and Allied Technologists (SGAT) is a non-profit making registered body of professionals from India and Abroad representing disciplines of Geoscience, Mining, Metallurgical, Mineral and Environment Engineering dedicated to promotion of Mineral Development in the Country. The Society has now over 700 life members.As a part of its development program, SGAT has been organizing Mineral Development Awareness and Quiz Programme (MDAQP) for the last 26 years on annual basis. The objective of the programme is to update the students pursuing PG Course in Geoscience, Degree Courses in mining, metallurgical, mineral and environment engineering about the latest developments in the respective areas. The activities under this programme include(a) visit to mines, haulage, loading and unloading systems, processing and metallurgical plants, nursery, plantation, environment protection measures, water harvesting structure among others.(b) identification of specimen of rocks, ores, minerals and metallurgical products, photographs.(c) interpretation of satellite imageries(d) oral quizThe institutions who have participated in the programme include India School of Mines, Dhanbad, IITs, Kharagpur and Bhubaneswar, IIEST, Shibapur, NITs of Rourkela, Jamshedpur and Raipur, AKS University, Satna; Government College of Engineering, Keonjhargarh and Kothagudem, Utkal, Sambalpur and Ravenshaw, IGIT, Sarang; DD Autonomous College, Keonjhar.During this 3-day program conducted at Joda Valley Club of TATA Steel, the participants were asked to identify the rocks, minerals, metallurgical products, photographs, analyse the satellite imageries, visited mines and plants of TATA, Rungta, Tata Sponge and finally participated in oral quiz program. In total 38 participants from 19 institutes participated in the program.  IIEST, Shibapur (Kolkata)  emerged as the overall winner of MDAQP 2017 and its participants, Anurag Jha and Dibyansh Jha were awarded with the best prize.   This year’s programme was sponsored by Tata Steel and collaborated by the Department of Steel & Mines, Govt. of Odisha. Admirable support was extended by Rungta Mines, Essel Mining and Tata Sponge Limited. The program was graced by  Mr. Sushant Kumar Naik, DDM, Joda; Mr. Salila Kumar Behera, DDM, Koida; Mr. J.P.Behera, Geologist from Directorate of Geology; Mr. Sanjay Patnaik, MD, Tata Sponge; Mr. Pankaj Satija, GM, OMQ, Mr. Debashish Jena, Joda Chief & Mr. SK Bhuinya, Principal Geologist form TATA Steel, Mr. V. Srikanth, Joint President (Operations) and Dr. Kageswar Mahanta, Vice President (Geology) from Essel Mining; Mr. Hirak Majumdar, Vice President & Director and Mr. Sujay Bose, Senior GM from Rungta Mines; Mr. L.N.Ghana, Regional Manager, OMC. From SGAT, Secretary  Mr. Sujit Mohanty, Treasurer  Mr. Trilochan Mahanta, Executive Member, Mr. A.B.Panigrahi participated. The programme was coordinated by Shri B K Mohanty, Former Director of Mining & Geology and Advisor, SGAT.
