Selfie Mania in Odisha : Two Women Died Falling Off In River Nagavali

Report by Badal Tah; Rayagada: While taking selfie, two women named E Jyoti aged 27 from Visakhapatnam and S.Devi aged 23 from Vizianagaram fell off in river Nagavali flowing near the cantilever bridge in Rayagada town and swept away. The corpses were recovered by the fire fighters and handed over to their friends. Both of them were working in an ornament shop in Visakhapatnam. They came alongwith a team of nine persons to witness deity Majhighariani.

The bridge is more than fifty feet from the stony riverbed. Situated at the periphery of Rayagada town, this cantilever bridge is the second one in Odisha and bears a picturesque serene atmosphere with tourist importance. But due to non-maintenance for a long period the sidewalls are damaged in few points. This could be one of the reasons of falling off. “Lack of security measures coupled with the selfie mania of the youths may take a few more lives. This spot can be developed as a tourist spot if a few facilities are provided by the administration”’ said Sri Rabindra Patakhandal, an young environmentalist of the district.
