Process to Apply for Aadhaar Card


Issued by the Government of India, an Aadhaar card is a unique 12-digit number given to resident Indians. The primary purpose of this card is to ascertain better regulation and prompt distribution of public welfare services.

The process to apply for Aadhaar card is a simple one. You can either do it online or offline. Here are the steps you need to follow:

How to apply for Aadhaar card?

Once you have all the required documents on hand, you can book an appointment on the UIDAI official site. Next, you can visit the enrolment centre to complete the following formalities:

  • Fill and submit the Aadhaar application form along with the required identity proof documents. These should provide proof of age, address and identity.
  • The details in these documents will be cross-verified with the information provided in the application form.
  • Once verified, you can proceed for the biometrics test, which include an iris scan and a record of all ten fingerprints. However, this test doesn’t apply for an applicant below the age of 5 years.
  • Post the test, an acknowledgement slip containing the applicant’s Aadhaar enrolment ID is generated.
  • Finally, the applicant’s Aadhaar card will be sent to the address mentioned in the application form.

Check Status:

Once you have completed all the formalities at the enrolment centre, you can easily track your Aadhaar status with the enrolment ID provided. Simply follow these steps:

  • Visit the UIDAI official site
  • Click on ‘Check Aadhaar Status’ option and type in the enrolment ID
  • Submit the requested security code
  • Click the ‘Check Status’ button
  • You will now see the current status of you card on screen

How to get Aadhaar card?

It typically takes about 90 days for the Aadhaar card to reach you by post. However, you can also download a soft copy from the UIDAI site and use this copy everywhere.

Get e-Aadhaar Letter:


Due to the sheer volume of people applying for Aadhaar, sometimes the card can take longer (more than 90 days) to get to you. In such a scenario, it would be advisable to avail the e-Aadhaar facility. Simply follow these steps:

  • Visit the UIDAI site
  • Below the ‘Aadhaar Online Services’ option, click the ‘Download Aadhaar’ link
  • This will lead you to a new page entitled ‘Download e-Aadhaar”
  • Below the ‘I Have’ tab, select the relevant option (in this case, enrolment ID)
  • Type in all the personal details as requested
  • Enter the captcha code and request for an OTP
  • Once the OTP is sent to the registered mobile number as mentioned in the form, you can successfully download a copy of the Aadhaar card

How to make sure your application is not rejected?

Your Aadhaar application may get rejected due to incomplete documentation and/or verification. In such a case, you can reapply for it by following the same procedure.

When you do receive your Aadhaar card, ensure that all the details have been properly entered. If you find any discrepancies in the details listed on your card, simply use the online service to update your Aadhaar information.
