Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi honours descendants of 16 families associated with Paika Bidroha at special function in Raj Bhavan Bhubaneswar. PM Modi says ‘Fortunate to meet families of martyrs of Paika rebellion’.
Family members of Jai Rajguru, Buxi Jagabandhu and Laxman Nayak and other myrters were greeted.
The PM shook hands and offered Namaskars to the recipients hailing spreading shawl on their shoulders. Governor Dr SC Jamir and BJP senio
r leader Bishwabhushan Harichandan were present.
It should be noted that the Paik Rebellion was an armed rebellion against the British East India Company’s rule in Odisha in 1817. The Paiks rose in rebellion under their leader Bakshi Jagabandhu and, projecting Lord Jagannath as the symbol of Odia unity, the rebellion quickly spread across most of Odisha.
