Bhubaneswar: In a bid to promote different forms of art in the city, Bhubaneswar Art Trail organized a riveting Panel Discussion on Indian Cinema themed ‘Imagining Cities in Movies’. The Panel Discussion was co-chaired by renowned filmmakers – Dharmanand Vernekar- a noted film maker and producer from Goa and Dr. Mohan Agashe-a renowned Indian theatre and film actor who also served as the Director General of FTII, Pune. The Panelists shared their experiences about how cities are represented in movies and how it has shaped their practice. The panel was moderated by Charudutta Panigrahi who is the Founder-Mentor of FIDR (Forum for Integrated Development and Research).
As many as 100 aspiring students and film makers attended the discussion. The panelists highlighted on various aspects of film making. Through various films and personal experiences, they spoke about their favourite movies and cities. They presented their vision for the city of Bhubaneswar and how they envisage it through the medium of cinema. This panel was good opportunity for aspiring film makers and movies buffs who participated in the discussion of movie making and how cities play an influential role.
Reflecting on the aspects of film making, Dr. Mohan Agashe said, “Emotion plays a vital role in making films. While making film one should have the ability to build emotions. Biologically, thoughts last longer than emotions and action last longer than words. So your emotion should be so strong that it should have the ability to be converted into thought and thought should have the ability to be converted into action. So unless our emotion gets that strength there is no point of conveying the message through film.”
When we talk of cities in cinema first we have to educate the community to know that what is a structured art, it can be used the way film maker wants to and that is very important and more often instead of doing the balancing act, from right emotions to the wrong emotions we generally sell the emotion which is a bad one. It tell you for a moment but it doesn’t give a longer run and its very biological. Thoughts last longer than emotions and action last longer than words. So unless your emotion is so strong it should have the ability to coverted into thought and thought should have the ability to be converted into action so unless our emotion gets that strength there is no point in the…. In the film you should have the ability to build emotion that can covert to action. This is the way I would like to look at cinema.
As part of the Bhubaneswar Art Trail various outreach programmes are organised in the Old Town. Cinema being one of the popular medium, BAT is organising various programmes related to Indian cinema. BAT is organising a two day film screening in collaboration with National Film Archives India, Pune and also a film poster exhibition which foregrounds Gandhian values.
