Dhenkanal: Majority of women in India are still restricted to menial household chores while men are often the sole breadwinners of the family. This stereotype gender-framework needs to change, said Akshaya Kumar Biswal, regional head, Oxfam India.
Such issues of gender roles, work participation, wage patterns, gender intersectionality with economic rights, problems, and loopholes in society came up for deliberations in the second edition of the four-part workshops on gender issues by Oxfam in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal. The workshop was attended by 50 odd students of the institute.
The resource persons also emphasized on laws, various pending bills, and relevant articles of the Indian constitution related to gender issues. Professor Mrinal Chatterjee, Regional Director, IIMC Dhenkanal, delivered the welcome address and talked about gender empowerment and misuse of constitutional rights.
Each participant in the workshop was given a case study to go through. Students also shared their opinions on their respective case studies. It was followed by a brief speech by Rukmani Panda, programme officer, Oxfam India. The third part of the workshop will be held on 29 November.
