Odisha: Two youths drowned in rivers during “Boita Bandana”

Report by Badal Tah; Rayagada, November 12: While Rayagada town was merry making on the eve of “Kartik Prunima”, grief shadowed over the family of Suman Behera, who got swayed away during wee hours of the traditional Boita Bandana day in the torrential stream of Nagavali river near cantilever bridge at Chekaguda. When Suman, a diploma student in the UGMIT engineering college, did not return back from the river, his friends tried to search for sometime, but in vain. They informed the fire service department, who after a thorough search could locate Suman’s dead body near Mariguda village. Though several accidents had happened in the same spot and many people had died, the authorities were callous and abdicated their responsibility by putting simply a warning board. This is really due to the lackadaisical attitude of the district administration.

In yet another incident, Santosh Jena went to celebrate the boat floating ceremony in Bansadhara river near Gumuda and slipped into the deep water. He was rescued by the locals and brought to Padmapur PHC where the doctor declared him dead. Losing of two youths on this auspicious day has left the families of the deceased and the locals in deep shock.
