Sukinda: Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) of Tata Steel, located in Jajpur district of Odisha, observed Earth Day today. 70 farmers from villages like Bambilo, Darjani, Krushnapura,Gudisahi, etc and 65 women members of 12 SHGs from the villages like Kaliapani, Katepurty Nagara, Bhimtanagar, Kakudia, etc from Sukinda block of Jajpur and Kakdahada and Bhuban block of Dhenkanal and members of Panchayatiraj Institutions participated in it.
In line with the theme of Earth Day for this year – Environmental and Climate Literacy – one technical session on Ill effects of pesticides in agriculture and organic farming and climate change was also organized. Agriculture experts and farmers shared practical experiences on how pesticides and climate change are impacting agriculture in rural areas. Many successful farmers like Chkaradhara Parida of Kenduapada, Ghansyham Mohanta of Krsuhanpura, Manguli Charan Parida of Bambilo spoke about how they have adopted modern methods of cultivation and got better yields.
Appreciating the efforts of Tata Steel Mr Chaudhury Jena, Assistant Agriculture Officer of Jajpur district, who had joined as guest of honour at the event said that such timely knowledge sharing sessions will keep the local farmers updated about happenings around and help them adopt best methods of cultivation without impacting environment.
Reiterating commitment of Tata Steel towards protection and promotion of environment and biodiversity, Mr Rajesh Patel, Chief, Mine, SCM, Tata Steel said the company will continue to engage with the communities to spread awareness on environmental issues.
Shri Pratap Chandra Patra, Zilla Parisada member, Shri Biswajit Mohanty, Sarapanch, Ransol Panchyat, Smt Kalpna Jena, Kaliapani Panchyat, farmers from Sukinda and Bamnipal area, Tata Steel officers, members SCM Workers’ Union, etc. attended the programme.
In order to contribute to the cause of biodiversity SCM has been organising a series of similar events like Spot the Species, Leaf Identification, Green Therapy, Jaibakala Vividhata, Prajatiya Khadyotsav etc.
