Bhubaneswar: Odisha has set a global benchmark in handling disasters. In the coming years, the disaster management efforts of the State will be to build resilience at all levels says CM Naveen Patnaik. CM Patnaik said this while addressing
Disaster Management Day celebration.

Disaster Management Day celebration in Odisha organised at Rabindra Mandap, Bhubaneswar where, Chief Minister of Odisha Sri Naveen Patnaik joined as Chief Guest and inaugurated the said function with the Chief Secretary and other Departmental Secretaries with SPD, OSEPA.

CM Naveen Patnaik appreciated the people of #Odisha for their determination to build a disaster resilient state & brave jawans of ODRAF, NDRF, Fire Service & Police for their outstanding work.

CM praised public officials, volunteers & civil society organizations for robust rescue, relief & rehabilitation measures in wake of Cyclone Fani. CM said that the state’s preparedness & successful management of #Fani has won praise from across the globe.

CM commended the pivotal role of Odisha State Disaster Management Authority in enhancing state’s capability for managing disasters. Created two decades ago, as first such agency to manage natural disasters, OSDMA’s work has been appreciated by policy makers and scholars worldwide.

CM stressed need for integrating principle of resilience in areas of development planning and recovery process for bringing down economic losses. He shed light on the state’s vision to develop disaster resilience in public infra & services, housing & livelihood.

 

On this day in 1999, Odisha witnessed a deadliest super cyclone which caused widespread destruction claiming around 10,000 lives & rendering millions homeless. 20 yrs have passed but basic amenities still elude places in Jagatsinghpur where the cyclone had made landfal.
