Bhubaneswar: Political Parties have the ritual of releasing their Election Manifestos just before every election to woo voters. These Manifestos tell the commitment, ideological path and future development focus of the parties concerned. But during the past few decades we have seen how political parties are deviating from their poll promises and backtracking from their own announcements.
The time is now to make them accountable to the people and bring the ELECTION MANIFESTOs under a legal framework. Election Commission of India is urged to set up a Task Force to monitor, to keep track and get a declaration from the party concerned that they will implement the promises made in their respective Manifestos in a phased manner once they are in the Government.
This and couple of other demands were made through the resolution adopted at the release and sharing of PEOPLE’S MANIFESTO 2019 programme held at Geeta Govinda Bhavan in Bhubaneswar on 28th February being organized by People’s Manifesto Committee(PMC) in collaboration with a host of other Community and Civil Society Organisations.
PMC has been working on People’s Manifesto since 2004. Since then it has brought Manifestos in every general elections dealing with issues concerning life, livelihoods’ of people at large and more specifically highlighting the concerns and aspirations of vulnerable communities.
This time also the process started three months ago and through identifying and conducting meetings on thematic areas, it held consultative meetings from village to state level, had sought expert opinions and feedback from a cross section of society and finally prepared the People’s Manifesto.
The People’s Manifesto 2019 was released today in the presence of representatives from various political parties, community leaders, social activists and experts in various fields.
The welcome address was given by Sri Sudarshan Chhotaray and the program was moderated by Sri Subas Panda. Sri Sachikanta Pradhan of Rashtriya Yuva Samaj and Sri Manohar Chouhan of CSD coordinated in preparation of the People’s Manifesto.
