Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for family of Mayurbhanj rape victim

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief and concern over rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Mayurbhanj district and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for next to the kin of the minor girl.

Conveying his deep sympathy to the family of the minor victim, Patnaik ordered a speedy trial of the heinous crime.

“Chief Minister @Naveen_Odisha expresses grief & concern and conveys his deep sympathy to family of the minor victim of Moroda in Mayurbhanj District. He has ordered speedy trial of this heinous case and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for next of kin of the minor girl child,” CMO Odisha tweeted.

Earlier in the day, police arrested a youth from Garudabasa village under Betnoti Tehsil in Mayurbhanj district in connection with the rape and murder of the minor girl.

The accused was identified as Jamini Mahanta, a resident of the same village. He had taken the girl on a bicycle ride and promised to drop her at a function organized on the occasion of Raja festival at a nearby village.

Later, the body of the victim was recovered from a forest area located near the village.

The villagers thrashed the youth suspecting a foul play following which he confessed to raping and murdering the minor.
