Odisha Chief Secretary reviewed progress of Solid Waste Management project of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation

Bhubaneswar: The progress of the Solid Waste Management ( SWM) project of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation was reviewed by Chief Secretary Sri Aditya Prasad Padhi in a high level meeting held in secretariat conference hall today wherein Municipal Commissioner Sri Krishan Kumar presented the updates. The issues relating to construction of waste to energy plant at Bhuasuni along with the orders of Hon’ble High Court and Hon’ble National Green Tribunal in the matter were discussed in the meeting. It was decided to go ahead for implementation of the directions of the Court and the tribunal.
Replying to a media query after the meeting, Chief Secretary Sri Padhi said that a waste management plant is an absolute necessity for a modern and growing city like Bhubaneswar. In this regard the Hon’ble High Court and Hon’ble NGT, Calcutta Bench have given their directions. We would implement these orders for construction of the plant. Replying to another media query, Municipal Commissioner Sri Kumar said that Solid waste management project is a statutory requirement for the city. State and BMC have a responsibility to construct the plant as per waste management rules. The public hearing of pollution control board has been scheduled on 6th June, 2017. BMC and Police would provide all help and assistance for successful conduct of the public hearing.
Available data show, the SWM project includes development of scientific dumping yard and establishment of one energy to waste plant for safe and secured processing of the waste. All the preparatory works for the project have been completed. Presently one case regarding the project is being tried in the High Court. The High Court in their interim order have asked BMC to go ahead with dumping of the solid waste at Bhuasuni landfill site. In another case, the National Green Tribunal have passed the interim order directing Housing & Urban Development department and Police to remove the obstructions posed by any element for construction of waste to energy plant.

Khurania, Collector Khordha Smt Roopa Rosan Sahoo, Member State Pollution Control Board Sri Debidatta Biswal, Mission Director, Swachh Bhrarat Mission Sri B. Parameswaran along with other senior officers from concerned departments participated in the deliberations.
