Odisha Assembly adjourned over chit fund scam, farmers’ problems

Bhubaneswar: The State Assembly witnessed frequent adjournments of proceedings and couldn’t transact normal businesses, excepting an obituary reference, on the second day of its Budget Session on Tuesday as Opposition Congress and BJP members kept protesting against chit fund scam and farmers’ problems all through the day.

As soon as an obituary for former Minister Harihar Karan was over at 10.42 am, Congress and BJP members rushed to the Well of the House and shouted slogans. BJP members wore black gowns alleging chit fund scam against Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Benerjee.

Congress members alleged that both the BJD Government here and the BJP Government at the Centre have pushed farmers to utter penury. They also demanded provision of allowance for unemployed youths.

As protests by the Opposition continued, Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat adjourned the proceedings four times till 4.02 pm and then till Wednesday. Though he had earlier convened an all-party meeting to resolve the impasse, the effort proved futile.

Before adjourning the House at 4.02 pm, Amat informed that the all-party meeting has decided to resume discussion on the Governor’s speech on Wednesday.
