Bhubaneswar: The agitating teachers and other staff of schools and colleges called off their 12-day strike on Sunday and decided to put the stir on hold till March 9.
The Teachers’ and the Employees’ United Forum took the decision after its leaders met Higher Education Minister Ananta Das and School and Mass Education Minister Badri Narayan Patra, who assured to fulfil six of their seven demands.Convener of the teachers’ body Golak Nayak while speaking to the media said a delegation of the forum met the Ministers at the State Secretariat and the latter assured to fulfil six of their demands, including withdrawal of the clause for submission of affidavits for release of grant-in-aid.
“The Government will consider their demand for increasing the age of retirement from 60 to 62 years. Besides, keeping in view the welfare of students and the oncoming HSC and Plus Two examinations, we decided defer our stir till March 9,” added Nayak.
“However, if the Government actually fails to fulfil our demands, we would take to the streets again and will skip the evaluation of the studenta’ answer sheets,” added Nayak.Later, Minister Patra said, “Thankfully, the teachers have kept our request because of the upcoming HSC and Plus Two examinations. Also, keeping in mind the ensuing Bijepur by-election, we asked them to cooperate with the Government.”
