Bhubaneswar: In order to spread the message of save trees and save environment, the students of Standard-I and Standard-II of DAV Public School, Pokhariput, under the guidance of their teachers and direct supervision of their supervisor, enacted a play “Chipko Movement’’, and took out a rally on the streets of Pokhariput.
The children with a beautiful presentation style staged the show. “Chipko Movement’’, also popularly called “Chipko Andolan’’, in Hindi, is a socio-ecological movement started by rural villagers, especially women in the 1970s. The movement was started primarily to protect trees and forests marked for government-backed felling for various projects. The popular movement was originated in the Himalayan region of Uttar Pradesh, which later became Uttarakhand. In 1973 it also quickly spread throughout the pan-Himalayan region. The Hindi word “chipko’’ means “to cling to” and also reflects demonstrators’ primary formulae of embracing the trees to drive the loggers away.
The little children also planted saplings in their school premises and took a green oath. On this occasion Principal of the School Dr. Sujata appreciated the efforts of the tiny-tots in spreading the message “Each One Plant One’’.
It can be mentioned here that Van Mahotsav was started way back in 1950 by the then Union Minster for Agriculture and Food, K.M.Munshi, to create awareness among masses for forest conservation and planting trees. It is a week-long festival, celebrated during the first week of July.
