Jayadev Bhavan Library : A Storehouse of Knowledge in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The glorious history of the Jayadev Bhavan Library began on 15th August, 1976 with the inauguration of Jayadev Bhawan (erstwhile Soochana Bhawan) which was under the administrative jurisdiction of Information & Public Relations Dept., Govt. of Odisha.
Jayadev Bhavan library is often the only readily available source of comprehensive information needed by students of Bhubaneswar for academic, personal and job-related purposes. It can be considered as a store- house of knowledge. It renders a great service to the students of the capital city. It plays a very important role in promoting the progress of their knowledge.
Countless students love reading. But all of them can not afford to buy books because of their high prices. So poor and meritorious ones of Bhubaneswar come to Jayadev Bhavan library, become its members and read invaluable books like Encyclopedias and dictionaries which cannot be purchased by them. Some students find it very difficult to do their studies at their homes due to various reasons. Jayadev Bhavan library is particularly useful for all such students.
Jayadev Bhavan library has been an important cornerstone of healthy & studious student community of Bhubaneswar. It imparts erudition and knowledge to students, give them the opportunity to find jobs, explore research, experience new ideas, get lost in wonderful literature, while at the same time providing a noiseless and tranquil atmosphere for serious study.
This Library reflects the diversity and character, and the needs and expectations of student community of Bhubaneswar. Those needs and expectations are often extensive, and the services of this library have proved to be invaluable.
This library occupies a very important place in the capital city. With its more than 20 thousand books suited to the interests and aptitude of students of different age group, with its numerous magazines, periodicals, news papers and with its quiet and serene atmosphere it has a special call to the students who go there and quench their thirst for reading the material which cannot be provided to them in the class room. Here they find an environment which is conducive to the building up of habit of self learning. This library is the center of the intellectual pursuits of 150 students who devote their whole day from 8 am to 8 pm in studying.
During these 43 years, this library has been able to produce a plethora of talents in various fields, who have brought laurels and acclaim for themselves and the State. Many bureaucrats, technocrats, leaders, intellectuals, poets, scientists have sharpened their acumen in this library.
Nevertheless, Jayadev Bhavan Library has to evolve according to the changing needs of the times. Realising it, Minister, Information & Public Relations dept. Sri Raghunandan Das visited the library and ordered to move it to the spacious upper floor of Geet Govind Sadan. It was immediately carried out on 14th October, 2019. Now, the new place has a capacity for more than 200 students. Commissioner-cum- Secretary Sri Sanjay Kumar Singh also visited the library and instructed to get all competitive magazines, newspapers and periodicals for students in adequate numbers, to have a barcoded system of entry, to install close circuit tv cameras throughout, set up the facility of pure drinking water, a cafeteria for tea, snacks and lunch, e-cataloguing of books, digitization, facilitate online study using internet in the well-eqipped e- library, connecting all e-libraries of the State so that students could access all books, to prepare a directory of ex-students of the library who have become the pride of Jayadev Bhavan Library.
Director, I & P.R. Sri Krupasindhu Mishra has ordered to expedite all these for the betterment of the Jayadev Bhaban Library, which has been emblematic of students’ faith in the advancement of the human intellect as a basic necessity to develop a conscientious and intellectually responsible society in the Capital City of Bhubaneswar.
