Dhenkanal: The media needs to focus more on rights issues of deprived section of society . Unfortunately in recent times media fails to address pressing challenges related to common man . Media is devoting only four percent space to the issues related to human development . Ironically these days the condition of vernacular media is becoming vulnerable , delivering a lecture on ‘Global Capitalism and Vernacular Media’ said professor Anup Dash .
Speaking on the occasion of Odia Journalism day celebration at Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenknal retired professor and head of department of sociology, Utkal university prof. Das said, ”We have a very rich past . Earlier there was a holy mission behind the publication of every newspaper. Those days media used to influence peoples’ mind, society and system but now all the good motive extinct ahead of industry . Today we live in a post truth society and in this society social media plays an important role” he added. He, however, lauded the role of vernacular media in shaping local culture and tradition. Expressing his concern over the safety of journalist he said, ” journalism is a very rigorous profession. The safety of jounalists is the major issue we need to raise today . According to UNESCO in every five days some where some journalist is being killed . The attacks , illegal arrest of journalists are condemnable and also a threat to the freedom of the media, said prof. Dash.
On the other hand visiting faculty of IIMC, Dhenkanal Shri Subir Gosh disscused about the role of vernacular media in India’s freedom struggle . Regional director of IIMC, Dhenkanal professor dr. Mrinal chatterjee welcomed all the guest at the beginning . Note worthy thing is the first odia newspaper ‘Utkal Deepika’ was published on 4th august 1866. Hence this day is celebrated as Odia journalism day . All the students and staffs of the institution participated in this event .
