Governor Dr. S.C. Jamir Inaugurates Odisha State Safety Conclave – 2017

Bhubaneswar: Developing a culture of safety is a journey. Once that framework becomes embedded in individual life or in an organization, you will find that the culture starts to change and results improve. Until an organization reaches the point where everyone owns the system and believes in it, until it enters the hearts and minds of the people to become a very part of who they are as an organization, that system and culture of safety is not sustainable. The culture of safety starts with leadership. Leadership drives behavior. And behavior establishes culture. Therefore, effort should be made on developing a sustainable culture of safety, said Governor Dr. S.C. Jamir.
Inaugurating 8th Odisha Safety Conclave – 2017 at Bhubaneswar Governor said, every industry or company desires safe operations but the great and abiding challenge is to translate this desire into action. The answer is not found only in written rules, standards, and procedures. While these are important and necessary, they alone are not enough. The answer is ultimately found in the industry or company’s culture – the unwritten standards and norms that shape mindsets, attitudes, and behaviours. It is people only who apply and operate technology.
It is important to develop a mindset that safety is not proprietary. It is by constantly learning and analyzing – by looking to best practices in other organizations, and by examining incidents, and near-misses – that we continually improve our own performance, Governor added.
Governor urged upon industries to instill the value of safety in employees from the first day, so that it would help creating a working environment in which safe behaviours are internalized, reinforced and rewarded.
France K. Morule, South African High Commissioner stressed upon adoption of best practices and technology to ensure safety in different processes. Anu Garg, Principal Secretary, Labour & Employees State Insurance, Debabrata Panigrahi, Managing Director, IQEMS, Subrat Panigrahi, Director, IQEMS, H.S. Mohanty, Head Jury Committee, S.N. Borkar Director, DGFASLI, Government of India, Vinod Kumar, Chairman, Safety Conclave among others spoke on the occasion.
