Bhubaneswar: In a positive development towards managing rainwater across the city, more than 600 decimal or 26,136 square feet of Government land was made free from encroachment at Nayapalli Bhoi Sahi, under Mouza Nayapalli within Nayapalli police limits, Ward No. 37.
The land will be immediately taken possession by the civic authorities so that in future it could be used for ponding of excess rainwater and water-logging situation could be avoided. It could be mentioned here that due to encroachment of low-lying and eco-sensitive zones for illegal housing the water carrying capacity of the water bodies and natural drainage channels are going down drastically, causing the rainwater to flood outside the catchment and inundate vast areas.
As per a special eviction programme by the Central Eviction Monitoring Committee (CEMC) today, the joint Enforcement Team of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Commissionerate Police consisting of the Officer and staff of BDA, BMC & Commissionerate Police proceeded to the spot for eviction of unauthorised encroachments over Plot No. 1071 at about 10.45 am. The requisition was made by BDA on August 2.
During the process of eviction two concrete houses, 27 asbestos shed houses, seven water tanks and near about 130 feet compound wall were demolished along with freeing 600 decimal of Government land from encroachment. Two excavators were engaged in the operation, which continued till 3 pm in the afternoon.
Among others Additional Commissioner-cum-Member Enforcement BDA Bhabani Shankar Chayani, Zonal Deputy Commisioner (South-West) BMC Diptirani Sahoo, Inspector-in-Charge, Nayapalli Police Station Umakanta Pradhan, Liasoning Officer BDA, Subhransu Sekhar Mohanty were present.
One platoon of gents APR force and one section of lady police force were deployed at the site to maintain law and order during the demolition drive. Enforcement squads No. 1, 3 of BDA and one each from Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited and BMC participated in the demolition drive.
It can be mentioned here that to contain the water-logging in Nayappali post-ISKCON situation, BDA and BMC has carried out series of enforcement drives to free encroachment from Nayapalli Haza, a water body near Behera Sahi so that rainwater would be stored there and it could be an ideal one with clean water flowing down as the water would be treated with scientific management of the water body.
The Drainage Channel No. 10, which has its origin from Nayapalli Haza in near future will flow with treated water so that it could be used in future project like Lake Neutral, which is also a major component in the Smart City Proposal. The width of the channel near Nayapalli Haza towards Bidyut Marg, under encroachment by locals would also face enforcement in near future.
