Disruptions in daily rituals in Shree Jagannath Temple continued on day 2; Assembly adjourned thrice over the issue

Bhubaneswar: The Suar and Mahasuar sevayats of the Shree Jagannath Temple here on Tuesday continued their protest demanding compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the losses incurred due to wastage of the ‘Amhunia Mahaprasad’ because of delay in temple rituals on Monday.

This led to disruptions in the daily rituals of the deities. Though temple administration officials and the Puri SP held a meeting with the protesting servitors, the efforts didn’t yield any concrete results.

The Odisha Assembly was adjourned thrice today following ruckus created by the oppositions Congress and BJP over rituals mismanagement in Jagannath Temple in Puri on Monday.

Meanwhile SJTA Chief Administrator Pradeep Jena appealed to the servitors to cooperate in smooth conduct of the temple rituals. He also requested them to put forth their stand before the Orissa High Court, which has been hearing petitions relating to the temple affairs.

It may be noted that the rituals to be performed ahead of the Jagamohan reopening on Monday had got delayed after the servitor supposed to perform the puja failed to turn up due to ill health.

This resulted in the delay in serving of morning Bhog to the deities as it was served at around 4 pm. This led to the wastage of the afternoon Bhog as it became ‘Amhunia Mahaprasad’ (not for use).

Soon after, members of Suar and Mahasuar communities sat in a dharna near the temple on Monday night demanding compensation from the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) for the losses incurred by them due to the wastage of Mahaprasad. The Bhog that was prepared on Monday was buried in Koili Baikuntha in the temple complex as per the rituals. The servitors also did not prepare Bhog on Tuesday.
