Bhubaneswar, May 8: On the second day of relief distribution to the victims of very severe cyclonic storm Fani, which hit the city on May 3, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today touched a nearly 50,000 mark. On the Day I of the distribution the civic body had distributed the Chief Minister’s Special Assistance to 23,000 families, yesterday.
The relief distribution of Rs 2,000 for immediate daily needs and Rs 500 for temporary shelter and procuring polythene sheets to each beneficiary family, is being conducted in all 67 wards across the city. Today it was done amidst deployment of adequate police force for smooth running of the operation. While cops were deployed for each centre, sector officer and a section each under each PS for the operation, six zonal ACPs are overseeing the work and one additional DCP has been deployed to monitor the process.
The assistance will be distributed to 1,04,814 families coming under National Food Security Act (NFSA) and State Food Security Scheme (SFSS). An eligible beneficiary has to produce the ration card to avail the relief and the respective ward officers are monitoring the activity under the supervision of sector officers of the city as it has been divided into 13 sectors for smooth conduct of the relief and rehabilitation operations in the city following the aftermath of the huge natural calamity. Community organisers are also helping in the process.
Sources said the civic body has geared up to execute the huge task as more than Rs 26 crore will be distributed through the city-wide process to help the needy in distress. The beneficiary families will also get the 50 kg rice per family under the special assistance, which they will collect later.
Addressing a press conference BMC Additional Commissioner Surath Chandra Mallick said “in some parts of the city the rice distribution has already started and within two/three days the cash distribution of relief will be completed.’’
The Additional Commissioner also added that the cleaning operation across the city will be done within two days time as the main roads are almost being cleared by several agencies working in a team.
Meanwhile, the multi-agency control room at BMC by 8.30 pm received 876 complaints. While all the agencies deployed 516 vehicles across the city for the cleaning and transporting work of the debris, the lifting of green garbage has become intensified.
While 29 teams of Works Department are working across the city, Fire Services has deployed 72 teams and NDRF 13 teams to make the city clean. Odisha Fire Service has deployed 450 people including its officials.
