Coal mining operations at Mahanadi Coalfields Limited partially affected by the strike

Bhubaneswar: The coal mining operations at Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) were partially affected by the strike resorted by trade unions across country in protest to government’s move of allowing 100 per cent foreign direct investment in Coal sector.
Out of 19 mines, work 9 mines were operational during the day while work at the rest was forcibly stopped by the protestors in Talcher and Ib Valley coalfields.
Local mine authorities submitted named FIR to concerned police authorities informing them about forced closure of mines and sought help to restore mining.
However, the affected mines remained closed with no mining or dispatch of coal during the day, incurring loss of production to the tune of 2.44 Lakh tonne.
The Chairman-cum-Managing Director, MCL had appealed to the workers no to participate in work stoppages.
