Bhubaneswar: BJP State in-charge Arun Singh on Saturday slammed the Odisha Government over the farmers’ plight in the State. At a Press conference here, Singh alleged that Brunda Sahu of Kalapani village of Bargarh district had run from pillar to post to appraise his grievance to all concerned officials and requested them to save his pest-infested crops, but it proved futile.
“Brunda had appealed to all concerned officers to save his paddy crops. He even had staged a dharna for this. However, his pleas fell on deaf ears,” said Singh.
He decried the sarcastic comments made by Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout and Labour Minister Sushant Singh (who belongs to Bargarh district) after Brunda’s death. “Such leaders should be sacked,” Singh said.
He wondered how Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is supporting such Ministers though they mock at the farmers’ plight and are putting the blame on others for farmer suicides.
“While the Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh Governments have provided bonus to farmers and concession in farm loans, the Odisha Government is yet to come to the rescue of the farmers who are in distress,” Singh said.
He said on November 19, an emergency meeting would be held to decide on the future course of action on the farmers’ issue. Speaking on the Mahanadi water standoff between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, he said the Odisha Chief Minister is only writing letters. Does writing letters solve any problem, he questioned.
