Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the desilting and cleaning work of all the 10 major natural drainage channels (storm water drains) and internal drains across 67 wards by engaging 25 contractors and three sanitation agencies. The civic body plans to finish the desilting work before the monsoon season.
Today senior officials also visited major drainage channels and Gangua Nullah to take stock of the situation. The Drainage Division of BMC, on the other hand, has taken initiative to clean/desilt the internal drains of BMC managed 10 wards.
For the desilting process now on daily basis 10 to 12 chain mounted excavators are pressed into the cleaning work and the number would go up as per the requirement. In places where mechanical cleaning is not possible more than 230 workers are engaged to carry out the desilting and cleaning work.
The largest civic body of the State targets to finish the cleaning/desilting work of the drainage channels/internal drains before the onset of monsoon showers. As per the preliminary reports of the Indian Meteorological Department, the monsoon clouds might touch the state towards end of the second week or the early third week of June.
It can be mentioned here that the city has got 10 numbers of drainage channels amounting to nearly of 60 km and internal drains of more than 560 km length. All the channels are carrying their loads to Gangua Nullah, which takes the waters to Daya river, as a tributary.
While the Drainage Channel No. 1 starts from Forest Lake Chandrasekharpur and meets Gangua Nullah after travelling a distance of 5.7 km, the shortest, Drainage Channel No. 2 starts from a culvert near Sainik School Road and travels 0.85 km and meets Drainage Channel No. 3 near railway bridge of VSS Nagar. The Drainage Channel No. 3 starts from Gajapati Nagar in front of Sainik School and meets Gangua Nullah after travelling a distance of 4.22 km.
The Drainage Channel No. 4 starts from Ekamra Kanan Lake and meets Gangua after a distance of 7.5 km. Drainage Channel No. 5 starts from the culvert in front of Gurudwara Singh Sabha on Janpath and meets Gangua after 3.54 km. Similarly, Drainage Channel No. 6 after originating from Ashok Nagar on Janpath meets Gangua after a length of 3.5 km. Channel No. 7 begins from a culvert near Banadurga Temple near Ganganagar and meets Gangua travelling a distance of 5.45 km.
The Drainage Channel No. 8 which starts from OUAT Firm near Bharatpur Reserve Forest has a length of 5.36 km before meeting Drainage Channel No. 9 at Panchasakha Nagar. The longest drainage channel, Channel No 9 travels 15.5 km before meeting Gangua on the city outskirts. Drainage Channel No. 10 starting from a small lake near Mumtaz High School Nayapalli travels 7.37 km before reaching Gangua.
