Odisha Govt urges Centre to declare Paika Bidroh as the first War of Independence

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government urges Centre to declare Paika Bidroh as the first War of Independence . A special State Cabinet meeting held here on Tuesday took a resolution demanding that the Centre declare the Paika Bidroh as the first War of Independence in the history of India.

“The Paika Bidroh was initiated in 1817 against the British, and it took place 40 years before the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857. Hence, the State Government insists that the Paika Bidroh should be regarded as the first War for Independence in the country,” Culture Minister Ashok Panda told reporters.

The Cabinet took the decision ahead of the bicentenary celebration of the Paika Rebellion scheduled to be held in New Delhi on July 20.
