Dhenkanal: On the eve of the conclusion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations across the country, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal, has brought out a monograph on ‘Gandhi as a Journalist and Editor’ in Odia. The monograph was edited by IIMC’s regional director Dr Mrinal Chatterjee and Kolkata-based journalist Snehasish Sur. It was first published in English last year.
The entire collection of essays has been translated from English to Odia by IIMC’s academic assistant Padmalochan Pradhan.
There are 21 articles in the monograph on different traits of Mahatma Gandhi’s life as a journalist and his role as an editor. Contributors from the world of academics and journalism including Tushar Arun Gandhi, Ramchandra Guha, Nikhil Chakravarthy, BP Sanjay have deliberated on how Gandhi’s communication skills and the newspapers he edited had a reflection on his struggle for India’s independence.
Releasing the publication Dr Mrinal Chatterjee said, “This is a tribute to the Father of the Nation as we focus on a completely different aspect of his great life. Many either don’t know or ignore the journalism Gandhi practised throughout his life to lead the freedom movement and preach his philosophy.” This publication will soon be turned into a book in Odia.
Photography workshop ends with an exhibition
The release of the book coincided with the conclusion of Photografia.3, the 4-day photography workshop in IIMC Dhenkanal on Wednesday. The intensive workshop on photography, photojournalism and visual storytelling came to a close with an exhibition of photographs taken by the participants.
Over a hundred photos depicting the life and livelihood of Dhenkanal town and Joronda, the headquarters of Mahima cult, were displayed in the exhibition. The photo-stories on the monks and sculptors of Joronda drew much appreciation from the visitors.
The resource person for Photografia, national award-winning photographer Himangshu Vyas said, “Photography brings a feeling of respect to whatever we see. The participants had a good sense of creativity and they captured the best moments during the photo walks.”
The workshop was aimed at those willing to pursue a career in photojournalism. Award-winning photographer Tabeenah Anjum Quereshi said, “Photography’s role is quite important in journalism. This photography workshop will certainly help those willing to pursue photojournalism as a career.”
A coffee-table book containing the entries of the exhibition will be published by the end of 2019. “This time the quality of the photographs is of quite a high standard. The photos do evoke emotions and this time we added write-ups from the participants with the photographs. They are all on display in the exhibition. We will be documenting them in the form of a book,” said Dr Mrinal Chatterjee.
65 participants had taken part in the third edition of Photografia. The fourth edition of the workshop will be held in late October or early November in 2020.
