FEDCO’s smart education initiative in a Puri village enables 100% school attendance

Bhubaneswar: A smart education initiative by Feedback Energy Distribution Company (FEDCO) in a Puri village school has seen some very positive impacts with the performance of students increasing by 75% along with 100% attendance.
The performance improvement at this government-run primary school in Suando village in Puri’s Satyabadi block was a direct result of FEDCO’s initiative to impart basic education in a more attractive and advanced way along with the strengthening of school infrastructure with the provision of water filter, desks, benches, fans and lights.
FEDCO, which distributes energy in State’s four electricity divisions–Puri, Balugaon, Khurda and Nayagarh- has adopted Suando Prathamik Vidyalaya under the company’s CSR project. Under this initiative, FEDCO team enabled audio-visual learning sessions, yoga classes, craft classes, games and general knowledge in the school curriculum with the help of external trainers.
“The core belief of FEDCO is to connect, serve and empower the community, which must go beyond electricity,” said Mr. Devtosh Chaturvedi, Managing Director of FEDCO.
“The dynamics of education and its role in national development and social transformation make it essential that educational programs keep continuously renewing in order to maintain its relevance to the changing societal needs, personal needs of learner and to the emerging national development priorities. After much efforts, a visible change has been observed in the behavior and attitude of the students. From convincing parents to accommodating new entrants, it is a long but exciting journey,” said Mr Samarjit Mohanty, CEO, FEDCO.
After quarterly assessment, it has now been observed that performance of students increased by 75% along with 100% attendance. Also, all necessary infrastructure support provided to create an environment where students will be interested to come to learn.
Suando village was selected to pay respect and tribute to the famous poet, freedom fighter, philosopher and social worker Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, who was born in this region.
After availing the permission from the district administration, the approach adopted by FEDCO was to first counsel the parents to spread the awareness on importance of education. FEDCO team coordinated with the school administration and introduced audio-visual method of teaching along with storytelling approach with practical demonstrations.
The visual learning make teaching sessions more interesting for students and accelerates the learning process. Students were taught with both digital as well as conventional methods.
Apart from regular classes, FEDCO CSR team also distributed school kits and games accessories like carom, basket-ball, badminton, cricket bat balls, ludo and puzzles to make the learning process even more interesting. A plantation drive was conducted and awareness rallies on health and hygiene, against open defecation and save electricity and water were organized.
Under this smart education initiative, FEDCO facilitated exposure visits for students to Regional Science Centre, Regional Museum on Natural History and Planetarium. Quarterly assessments for rewarding the kids to encourage them to have focus on studies were also conducted.
Apart from the formal education curriculum, students also got soft skill training as well English language proficiency and communications classes. Yoga sessions were conducted with an objective of a healthy mind and healthy body. To develop creativity among children, art and craft exposure was provided in the school.
As a result of all these initiatives, attendance was ensured 100% which was earlier 56% and number of drop outs reduced by 100%. Number of Transfer Certificates (TCs) declined and enrolments increased in the school. With acquired appropriate knowledge, skills, values and attitudes their confidence level increased as number of dropping out of the passed students have been reported by the parents.
