A First new champion or ATK

The Indian Super League will crown a new champion today when Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan meet in the finals. In the ISL’s seventh season, Mumbai City FC has finally reached the finals and is a tight favorite in a pretty even match. They’ll have the reigning champions on the opposite, ATK Mohun Bagan, who finished second in the regular part of the season, on even points just like the leader Mumbai City.

What’s most curious about the regular season is that both teams finished with 40 points and an equal record – 12-4-4. The goal difference decided the first two places in the end since Mumbai City was the more effective team. The Mumbai-based team won the League Shield too, and if betting sites are to be believed, it’s right on course for a double.

A Long Time Coming

Mumbai City is one of the most expensive teams in the league. However, the team didn’t manage to win a thing since the ISL’s inception. It came close on a few occasions, but ultimately, Mumbai City FC didn’t even finish as a runner-up.

That was bound to change before the new season. The club’s management made more than a few core changes. Most importantly, it became a new team in City Football Group’s portfolio, the same conglomerate that houses Manchester City. This brought a fresh hope for the Islanders. With the appointment of Spaniard Sergio Lobera as the new team manager, the club stated its high intentions.

The club also made changes on the players’ front. Bartholomew Ogbeche was brought in alongside Adam Le Fondre on loan from Sydney FC. The English striker was a major hit, delivering 11 goals in 20 matches for the Islanders. After the great regular season, the club brought in its first title in Indian football by winning the League Winners Shield.

It has achieved what fans have been waiting for years, yet the Super League final will be a completely different challenge.

Can ATK Repeat?

ATK Mohun Bagan are the current champions in the ISL and pretty close to a double. Experts are adamant that the team has what it takes to fend off Mumbai’s challenge and win its second title in a row and third overall. Last year, the team beat Chennaiyin in the final 3-1 and came into the new season full of confidence. Goal difference eventually decided the placement in the regular season, with ATK finishing second to Mumbai City FC.

Since the appointment of Antonio Lopez Habas, the team has been on a roll. The 2019 acquisition of Roy Krishna proved the right move. The Fijian player is this year’s top strike with 15 goals and a serious threat to any defense.

This year’s ISL final is rightfully called the clash of the titans. It has been a season of very close games, with both ATK and Mumbai City FC in great form. Bookies can’t divide the teams too, giving slightly better odds for Mumbai. However, ATK is no pushover. The reigning champ surely won’t like to hand the title over to is opponents, so everyone’s expecting fireworks on the pitch.

It will surely be a close game if the regular season is any indicator. Both teams finished on even points and are even in terms of quality as well. This might be the year where Mumbai City FC establishes a new franchise to dominate for years to come. If ATK Mohun Bagan wins, it will cement its place as the top club in the Indian Super League.

Who Wins?

It will surely be a match to remember. The Mumbai Indians already wished the best to the team ahead of the ISL final. ATK’s supporters are on fire on social media too, so all that remains is to wait for the final. The teams are too close for us to pick a side. Each one’s supporters will lean toward their team, but it’s pretty obvious that this will be a final that should go in the history books. If Mumbai City wins, it will end a phenomenal season on a high. If the champs win, they’ll have bragging rights for years to come.

The clock is ticking, and we’re eager to see who comes on top.
