Bhubaneswar: Karnataka girl Ashita Singh caused the biggest upset of the ongoing Yonex-Sunrise 33rd National Sub-Junior Badminton Championships 2019, knocking out third seed Manya Alvani of Maharashtra 21-18, 21-19 in their U-15 singles match at Saheed Nagar Indoor Hall here today.
But top seed and Asian Junior runner-up Tara Saha (Maharashtra), second seed Anupama Upadhyaya (Haryana) and fourth seed Radhika Sharma (Punjab) registered straight-game wins to join Ashita in the pre-quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, U-15 boys’ singles top seed Raghav (Haryana) secured his place in pre-quarterfinals without shedding any sweat as he received walk-over against Yohenba Singh N (Assam) at East Coast Railway Indoor Stadium.
Two pairs of quarterfinalists were identified in U-15 girls’ doubles event on the third day of the championship, which is being hosted by Odisha for the first time. They were: top seed Kerala duo Andrea Sarah Kurien, Pavithra Naveen and second seed Karnataka combination of Gayathri Rani Jaiswal and Karnika Sree S.
