Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) celebrates silver jubilee
Dhenkanal: The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) on Tuesday celebrated its glorious existence of 25 years with a grand event here on the campus. Speaking on this occasion, Subroto Bagchi, Chairman of Odisha Skill Development Authority said that a country must have world-class educational institutions and encourage high-quality research to earn respect at the global level.
“A country doesn’t become great by having politicians, good governance or prominent personalities. If a country wants to earn respect on the global stage, it has to create world-class institutions and encourage research,” he said.
Pounding on the importance of technological development and research, he said, “In Japan, the companies aren’t just concerned about increasing output. They are focusing on research and innovation. Thanks to this, they have been able to make significant progress in the field of science and technology, strengthening their position as an industrial superpower.”
KG Suresh (Director General, IIMC, Delhi), Brigd. K P Singh Deo (Former Minister, I & B), Prof. Vijay Parmer (Dean Academics, IIMC, Delhi), Prof. Geeta Bamzai (Regional, Campus, IIMC, Delhi) and Prof. Dr. Mrinal Chatterjee, Regional Director, IIMC, Dhenkanal were also present at the occasion.
Louding the achievements of the Institute, Brigd. Singh Deo said, “IIMC is a national institute with an international reputation. IIMC students have achieved quite a lot in various fields.”
Books compiling media-related articles by prominent media personalities, Sambad Prasanga-2 and IIMC Silver Jubilee Souvenir were inaugurated by the guests at the event. IIMC Students also presented silver jubilee commemorative cups to the guests on this occasion.
The event was followed by a lecture by Sri Subtoro Bagchi on “Skill, Development and Democracy” and a couple of discourses on “Democratisation of Knowledge” and “Trial by Media”. Prof. Srikant Mahapatra, vice chancellor of Odisha State Open University (OSOU), Prof. Vijay Parmar, Abhaya Padhi, Former DDG, Prasar Bharti, Senior Journalist and Media Academician Snehasis Sur and Prof. Geeta Bamzai deliberated on these discussions.
In the evening, a cultural programme was presented by the artists of Govt. of India’s Song and Drama Division.
The programme will continue till 28th February. On the last day of the celebrations, Jyoti: Centre for Visually Impaired Persons’ made by Indian Oil Corp will be inaugurated. Along with this, prominent media personalities from across the state will deliberate on several important issues.
