Twelve persons killed as bus falls off Mahanadi bridge in Cuttack; Odish CM announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for kin of deceased

Cuttack: At least twelve persons were killed and 30 others injured after a passenger bus fell off bridge over Mahanadi River near Jagatpur in Cuttack on Tuesday.Expressing deep grief over the death of at least 10 passengers in the Mahanadi bus tragedy on Tuesday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia each to the next of the kin of the deceased.

The Chief Minister conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family. He also announced that the injured persons in the mishap will be given free treatment.

Director general of police RP Sharma confirmed that seven passengers of the bus died in the mishap. “I am extremely saddened to know about seven deaths…RIP…most of the other injured have been shifted to the hospital and are receiving treatment….wish them a speedy recovery,” Sharma tweeted.

“Injured are being shifted to SCB Medical College. Doctors are ready. Fortunately no deaths. Immediate treatment of injured is being ensured…..senior officials present at the spot and the hospital,” Sharma tweeted.

“I am personally monitoring…call of duty has taken me outside Odisha or else would have visited the injured….to offer words of comfort… wish all a speedy recovery,” he wrote.

“Darkness making the job difficult. ASKA lights, et al have been pressed into service. ODRAF will cross the river and reach the bus… Operations in full swing….boats, ropes, etc. ODRAF and Police in full action,” he added.

Notably, the ill-fated bus named Tanis carrying passengers was heading to Cuttack from Talcher in Angul when it hit a buffalo on the road and fell into the river.

ODRAF team of Odisha Police have been pressed into service for rescue operation of the accident victims. CP, DCP Cuttack, Commandant 6th OSAP Battalion are on the spot and monitoring the operation.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed deep concern over falling off of the passenger bus. As health and family welfare minister Pratap Jena is in Delhi, the Chief Minister asked sports minister Chandra Sarathi Behera to go to the accident spot and ensure treatment of the injured.
