Report by Nishapati Nayak; Koraput: A Special Lecture on Secularism and It’s Contexts has been organized at the Central University of Orissa, Koraput on 7th March 2018 by the department of Sociology. Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, Vice-Chancellor, CUO, Koraput inaugurated the programme and delivered the inaugural address. Prof. Vinod K Jairath (Retd.), an acclaimed Developed Studies expert of international eminence currently Professor of Sociology, University of Hyderabad delivered the special Lecture. Dr. Kapila Khemundu, HoD of the dept. of Sociology who was away in Delhi on official work has sent his good wishes for the success of the events.
In his lecture, Prof. Jairath mentioned that there is a distinction between problem in society and sociological inquiry to the problem. He emphasized that there are different ways of understanding secularism. He clearly pointed out that there is no permanent relation of hostility between being secular and being religious. One should apply reason in understanding religion.
Prof. Mohanty, mentioned that secularism and its contexts is pedagogically very important. He also mentioned that there is a fundamental distinction between church and state in West. He also highlights the secular modernity in contemporary times.
The Special Lecture also covered a Book Release ceremony. Book entitled Main Currents in Development Studies written by Dr. Aditya Keshari Mishra, Faculty Member, Department of Sociology, CUO was released by Prof. Jairath and Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Sagarika Mishra, Faculty Member, Department of Sociology, CUO delivered a brief idea about the book. She mentioned that the book can serve a comprehensive reference book for the post-graduate and research scholars and it covers several significant themes on development studies.
Mr. Niranjan Majhi, student of sociology proposed a formal vote of thank. Ms. Soumya Samarpita Mahapatra, student of sociology coordinated the programme. The programme was attended by students, scholars, faculty members and staff of the CUO.
