Socially Smart Bhubaneswar: Youth Connect campaign spreading awareness among students on safety and healthy lifestyle

 

Bhubaneswar, Sept 15: In order to sensitize and spread awareness among the youth, especially large student mass in the city, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) along with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) has launched two interactive campaigns ‘Safe Campus Safe City’ and ‘Healthy Life, Healthy Style’ in various technical and higher education institutions across the city.

This initiative has gained immense importance at a time when the threat from deadly on-line game has threatened the young mass and the campuses are also becoming vulnerable to different types of substance abuse.

As part of these two campaigns, City Changer Labs are being organized in various educational institutions wherein the students are involved in a variety of activities such as poster design, skit competition, yoga and aerobic sessions, self-defense training, symposiums, apart from counseling sessions by domain experts through workshops on contemporary topics like substance abuse, safety of girls and women, cybercrime, crime against women etc. The city authorities aim to conduct activities on both these themes in over 80 higher education institutions in the city.

An awareness programme was conducted today at Swosti Institute of Management and Social Studies on safety of women in Smart City Bhubaneswar. A similar workshop on legal provisions to safe guard women’s rights was conducted at KIIT Law School yesterday along with debate, slogan and poster competitions on the theme of Safe Campus, Safe City theme.
Participating in these workshops, member of State Women Commission Snehanjali Mohanty talked about various legal provisions to safeguard women’s rights, sexual harassment at workplace, and various support services for girls and women facing gender based violence.

During a similar workshop on mental health and substance abuse at School of Nursing of SOA University on Thursday, experts deliberated on various forms of drug abuse, symptoms and phases of addiction, stress and anxiety disorder, vulnerable age of youth when they fall prey to substance abuse. The students and participants were sensitized on role of peer groups, teachers and family members in overcoming the menace of substance abuse among the youth. The experts also opined that parents, teachers and peer groups need to be alert to spot symptoms such as a youth getting frequently irritated, not eating properly, complaining sleeplessness, increased tendency to burrow or steal money and similar suspicious activities which are common in substance abuse victims.

During a workshop on healthy lifestyle conducted at ITER of SOA University, senior nutritionist Dr. Madhusmita Tripathy deliberated on the importance of healthy food habits for the students for leading a healthy life in future. In a similar workshop conducted earlier at KIIT Univrsity, the resource person from Patanjali, Ranchi explained the students on water therapy, correct way / posture of drinking water along with the importance of healthy food habits for a healthy mind and body. The students of KIIT University also participated in the Yoga and Aerobics sessions conducted as part of the Healthy Life, Healthy Style campaign. Students of the School of Electronic Engineering of the University will also be participating in a Zumba fitness session slated to be held on Saturday morning as part of this campaign.
