Research Methodology Workshop for Yoga and Naturopathy Students of North Odisha University

Bhubaneswar: North Odisha University (NOU), Baripada recently organized a workshop on Research Methodology for Master students of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (MNYS). Master Trainer Prof Kamala Kanta Dash of Kalinga Kusum Foundation was invited to train the first year and second year MNYS students at the university.

Prof Dash, who is a certified yoga educator and a social science researcher, in this four-hour workshop, covered basic topics in social science and health research. He advised students to read original yogic texts in Sanskrit and use Odia translation when facing difficulty to understand, analyze and interconnect. He combined his training in soft skills, yoga, theatre and media to entertain students and inspired students to think creatively about the issues and problems within one’s mind and within one’s community.

The half-day workshop covered four topics. The first topic was on understanding the basic foundations of yoga through four major definitions. The second topic was to understand the concept and characteristics of science. The third topic was to understand the concept of research in general. The fourth topic was how to approach research in a step-wise manner. Several examples from research studies were cited from areas of science, social science, medical science, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and yoga.

The session also included a vocabulary enhancement exercise developed by Prof Dash, who has named this as the “Wonder On Words” (WoW) game. Students were asked to share as many words as possible on the word ‘Mind’. Students found this game extremely useful for their understanding of the word ‘mind’ and its different aspects, facets and perspectives.

Department In-charge Assistant Professor Jitendra Parida offered the vote of thanks. Prof Parida shared his student days experience at Sri Sri University and suggested students combine practical skills with conceptual thinking in yoga and naturopathy.
