Polythene ban: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation intensifies enforcement

Bhubaneswar: After the Corporation nod for the fine structure to be implemented for violation of no plastic/polythene across the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) limits the specials squads of the civic body today carried out massive enforcement drive across the city.
Three zones of BMC under the leadership of their respective Zonal Deputy Commissioners (ZDCs) carried out raids at different places and seized plastic/polythene materials.
South East Zone conducted enforcement under the leadership of its ZDC at several places including the Unit I Hear and nearby areas and seized 16 kg of polythene. The squad made the raids along the Unit I Market and the area from Rajmahal Square to AG Square including vending zones and also along the Rajmahal-Master Canteen Square.
The special squad of South West Zone under the leadership of ZDC Lalatendu Sahoo seized 5 kg of polythene. The raids were conducted from Delta, Fire Station, CRP Square and nearby areas.
Enforcement conducted by special squad of North Zone under the leadership of ZDC NZ, Pramod Kumar Prusty at 45 places and seized 5kg polythene 500pcs of plastic glasses and plates. Raids were conducted along the Jaydev Vihar CS Pur Road.
The civic body, however, not collected fine today. “We have not collected fine as we are giving a grace period. However, the enforcement will be effective on daily basis to instil the practice to have use of no plastic in our day-to-day life and especially the dangerous polythene and thremocol products,’’ said an official.
As per the notification of the Forests and Environment Department, Government of Odisha, dated of September 29, 2018, there was a grace period of 30 days and after that the three BMC squads have already started their action swiftly and also seized polythene/plastics at various places since yesterday.
