Odisha: Women thrashed liquor vendor, protesting alcohol sell in Erasama village

Report by Kahnu Nanda; Jagatsinghpur: An uproar sight was witnessed in Gadaharishpur village under Erasama block 40 km away from here on Tuesday as hundreds of women and activists from local women organization Jhansi Rani Mahila Samiti thrashed a liquor vendor who had been selling alcohol in village.
The irate women were ransacked vendor’s alleged shop on the village outskirts, drive round the adjacent areas after garlanding shoes around his neck later tonsured the alleged man’s head, far along cops rushed to the spot and rescued the victim from the clutches of womenfolk. The victim vendor was identified as Maheswar Jena resident of Gadaharishpur village who is known as an illegal liquor trader in locality.
As liquors sell are thriving in Erasama coastal village the Jhansi Rani Mahila Samiti comprising members from SHGs, anti-liquor organistaions and women from the locality have started a drive seeking complete ban of alcohol.
In this regard the organization with support of police have restrained selling of liquor. Besides a liquor trader Maheswar Jena from Gadaharishpur was doing his business secretly, the anti-liquor women leaders had warned him several times but he paid no heed was succeeding his business as consequence he came under wrath of angry women on Tuesday, report said.
