Odisha will experience heavy rain under the impact of a possible severe cyclonic storm

Bhubaneswar: Odisha will experience heavy rain under the impact of a possible severe cyclonic storm in the southeast Bay of Bengal, the IMD Bhubaneswar centre said on Friday.

“Yesterday’s Depression over southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into deep depression and moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 0830 hrs 1ST of 14th December, 2018 over southeast Bay of Bengal, about 670 km east of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 930 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 1090 km southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh),” a statement said.

“It is very likely to intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm during next 24 hours and into a Severe Cyclonic Storm in subsequent 36 hours. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Ongole and Kakinada during 17th December afternoon,” the statement added.

Under its impact, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places over districts of Odisha on 16th, at many laces over districts of Interior Odisha a few places over districts of coastal Odisha on 17th and at a few places over districts of Odisha on 18 December.

Besides, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal of Odisha on 17th December.
