Odisha: No access to ambulance pregnant delivers on road at Umerkote

Report by Basant Rath; Nabarangpur: In a highly unfortunate incident, a pregnant woman delivered boy child on road on Tuesday night while she was carried to hospital on a cot by her kin.

According to reports, Kalabati Santa, (29) of Pahnri Kumuda village in Umerkote block complained of labour pain in evening on Thuesday following which her family members telephoned 108-ambulance service.

However, the ambulance couldn’t arrive at the village due to deteriorated road condition. Finding no other way, the kin of the pregnant woman carried her on a cot for around 4 km. In between 2 kms of their carried she delivered a boy baby on road, after her delivery villagers took her another 2km where ambulance was available. With theambulance she along with her baby was later admitted in CHC Umerkote, now condition of the woman and her baby was stated to be stable,
reports said.

Road connectivity is a major issue in many remote villages of the district as a result of which, they fail to avail ambulance service and other healthcare facilities during emergency.
