Bhubaneswar: In the wake of water supply crisis following the massive impact of very severe cyclonic storm FANI, the state government will use copter service to fetch spare parts and mechanics from Kolkata as such spares are not available for the high-end generators deployed to supply uninterrupted power supply to the water treatment facility in Mundali.
It can be mentioned here that Mundali water treatment facility of Public Health Engineering Organisation (PHEO) supplies over 70 percent drinking water needs of the city pumping and treating waters from river Mahanadi. However, as the power supply to the pumping station and treatment plant is on the city outskirts and the Mundali-Chandaka Pipeline is affected by uprooting of thousands of trees across its more than 15-km path, emergency measures are underway to restore water supply through the pipeline.
In order to restore the power supply the State Government had already arranged two 1,500 KW generators for the power supply to Mundali. However, panels of these two high-end generators were severely damaged by the whirling winds of FANI. As the spares are not available in Bhubaneswar, the state government has used the copter service to get the spares and the technicians to serve the people’s need on priority basis.
Meanwhile, keeping the urgency in mind the Energy Department has taken up special measures to ensure power supply to Mundali treatment plant so that the water lifeline of Bhubaneswar will be on track very soon as a larger area of the city is depending on its water supply.
The PHEO has also initiated water supply in many areas across the capital city and has covered 40 percent area with a low pressure so that people will not face any difficulty. Many areas of the Capital were also supplied with water tankers by PHEO and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation including the affected slum pockets and the temporary cyclone shelters where water supply was needed urgently.
MULTI-AGENCY CONTROL ROOM & UPDATES
The 132 temporary cyclone shelters are providing shelter and food to over 85,000 affected people with ‘katchha’ and semi-permanent houses across the city.
The multi-agency control room in BMC till 5 pm today received 460 complaints of various nature, i.e. uprooting of trees, damage to electricity poles, water supply
While five teams of NRDF personnel are deployed across the city with 121 personnel and eight officers, Works Department has deployed 29 teams in various section offices across the city to clear roads. Odisha Fire Service has deployed 250 personnel in six teams to clear the roads. Energy Department (Central Electricity Supply Utility) has formed three teams to oversee damages to electricity poles. Personnel from ODRAF were also deployed in the city.
