Odisha Govt proposing to hike the daily minimum wages of unskilled labourers by 40 per cent

Bhubaneswar: The State Government has issued a Gazette notification proposing to hike the daily minimum wages of unskilled labourers by 40 per cent, semi-skilled labourers by 45 per cent, skilled labouerers by 54 per cent and highly-skilled labourers by 65 per cent.

According to the notification issued on August 3, 2018 by the Labour and Employees State Insurance Department, the general people have been asked to submit opinions before the Labour and ESI Department within two months. If majority of complaints don’t go against the proposal, then the minimum wages would be increased as proposed. According to the proposal, the minimum wage of unskilled labourers would increase from Rs 200 to 280, of semi-skilled labourers from Rs 220 to Rs 320, of skilled labourers from Rs 260 to Rs 370 and of high-skilled labourers from Rs 260 to Rs 430.

It is proposed that dearness allowance would be added to the minimum wages every six months. The proposed hike would help as many as two crore workers/employees in improving their economic conditions besides checking inter-State migration. Notably, the State Government had hiked minimum wages of all kinds of labourers in April, 2015 for the last time.
