Odisha: DIMTS wins bid to design ISBT in Baramunda

Bhubaneswar: Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS) has won the bid for the architectural design and market assessment studies of the much awaited Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) at Baramunda. The bid process was conducted by Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) as the bus terminal will be developed by BDA.
BDA on July 27 this year floated the tender for selection of an architectural and urban design consultant for the ambitious ISBT at Baramunda.
As per the requirement of the project, DIMTS will submit an “inception report’’ and “market demand assessment and best option study report’’ on the project, which is the biggest bus terminal of the state with operations connecting inter and intra state locations.
More than 1,000 buses are using the terminal of 15.5 acres and is a transport lifeline for thousands of commuters. The site is well connected with the nearby NH-16 with two wide and accessible roads.
DIMTS, a well-known organisation in developing design and market assessment studies on bus and multi-modal transport, has also developed ISBTs at Kashmere Gate, Sarai Kale Khan and Anand Vihar in New Delhi and also executed similar projects in New Delhi Railway station and multi-modal transport network for Anand Vihar Railway Station. Besides, the organisation has also done ISBTs at NIT Faridabad, Ambala city and eight towns in Jharkhand. DIMTS was one among four bidders, who participated in the bidding process.
PROJECT COMPONENTS
The design components for the ISBT project, would, however integrate mixed land use development with commercial office space, retail space, multi-level care parking and open public space. The terminal will ensure passenger pick-up and drop-off (PPUDO) facilities for private vehicles, pre-paid private vehicles, pre-paid auto rickshaws, taxis, cycle rickshaws, and taxi-aggregator vehicles such as Ola and Uber.
Interestingly, the ISBT project will also have a design to integrate an efficient fibre-optic network, ensure Wi-Fi connectivity, area-wide real-time parking information display system, coordinated transit information system for intra or inter-city bus service and future mass transit system, provision for Controlled Access Management to allow pro-active monitoring of the development including CCTV surveillance and integrating Building Information Modelling (BIM) in building architecture.
As per the tender documents the design of the new ISBT at Baramunda would be flexible enough to compliment the nearby areas, represent the culture, architectural elements used in buildings and monuments of Bhubaneswar city and aesthetically appealing while establishing a unique identity for a modern urban centre. It would also have a safe and vibrant public plaza.
The proposed design should create a safe, welcoming and integrated experience for the passengers arriving via rail, bus or intermediate public transport. The design element should also have the power to attract passengers to public transport.
EASY, ACCESSIBILE DESIGN:
The ISBT at Baramunda would have easy access by people with mobility limitations and integration of transport and non-transport uses. While the facility would have child-friendly features and design elements, all its nooks and corners will have mandatory adherence to the universal accessibility guidelines for the entire project.
The existing Baramunda bus terminus encompassing a huge 15.5 acres of space, is currently operating more as a depot for both OSRTC and private buses, rather than functioning as a high frequency intermodal terminal. So, the new design for the ISBT will ensure to change the philosophy and transform the facility to a high-frequency multi-modal terminal.
To serve the parking demand of the mixed use development, the ISBT will have multi-level parking (MLP). The ground floor of the MLP should plan to include retail spaces to maintain the active frontage to avoid standalone parking structures.
While the design solution will include the possibilities of integrating future mass transport facilities as well, other components like Intermediate Public Transport (bicycles, auto-rickshaws, taxis and car-sharing), passenger information centre and parking for specially-abled and VIPs would also be ensured.
