Report by Kahnu Nanda; Jagatsinghpur: A Dalit family comprising three members hailing from Atamala village six km away from here was started an indefinite fast unto death stir before collector office seeking justice on Friday. The victims appropriated this extreme step when they failed receiving justice from police and civil administration and judicial forums.
Report said that the victims Brundaban Behera and his son Jagannath Behera had come under wrath of one police constable Atul Kumar Biswal following a frisk incident at Hat Bazar here three months back. The victims had complained that constable Biswal and his associate had severely beaten them but police arrested duo father and son on the charge of assaulting a police constable and slapped a case against them under section 341, 294, 332, 353, 427, 307,336 and 34 IPC and forwarded court.
Meanwhile victims’ family had lodged an FIR against constable Biswal alleging his unruly act and misbehaving Jagannath’s wife Baisali Behera but police ignored the complaint.
After spending 18 days in jail the victims got bail from court and approached district superintendent of police, Human right commission, women commission, collector seeking justice but failed to receive any response as consequence we launched this indefinite fasting before collector office , informed Jagannath.
Moreover victim’s wife Baisali informed that as they were Dalit and poor downtrodden no body is hearing our grievance, a man in uniform assaulted my husband, age old father in law later insulted me in my residence but police have been ignored our complaint, no probe has been instituted yet so we decided to go on fast un to death seeking justice, she informed.
