Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik declares new pro-poor food security scheme

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced new scheme for food security in Odisha with effect from Gandhi Jayanti for universal coverage and inclusion of left out from NFSA 2013. He said Odisha will fund the shortfall after reminders to Central Government to correct anomaly went unheeded. He announced this during the discussion at Ama Mukhyamantri Ama Katha programme.

“As I had promised you in 2014 that we will enact our own food security scheme, we will implement it from October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti) this year as lots of our eligible beneficiaries have been deprived of the National Food Security Act (NFSA),” Naveen said.

Announcing that the scheme would be implemented from October 2 this year, Naveen said that despite his repeated pleas to the Centre, it had left 34.44 lakh beneficiaries from the act’s purview.

“I will not allow a single poor person to be deprived from the benefits of the act,” Naveen said while addressing grassroots-level representatives of 10 districts under his Ama Mukhya Mantri – Ama Katha (our chief minister, our views) programme through videoconferencing. It was his subsidised rice scheme that had helped Naveen retain power in 2009 and 2014.
